The move puts the school in line with an Indiana Supreme Court recommendation as the court weighs a petition that would allow graduates of certain non-American Bar Association-accredited law schools to sit for the Indiana bar exam.
But the online law school had been considering a name change even before the petition, Dean Martin Pritikin said.
When Purdue University Global was created in 2018, Concord Law School, which was then 20 years old, kept its name.
Now, the law school’s branding will be aligned with Purdue Global’s.
“Having the Purdue name as a more prominent component of the law school’s name will be a benefit,” Pritikin said.
The Purdue Global Board of Trustees approved the change Friday. Leadership can now start making the change and submit paperwork to various higher education and accrediting groups.
The name change is effective in November, according to a release from the school.
The change was one of the recommendations from a working group of the Indiana Supreme Court that explored whether to allow graduates of non-ABA-accredited schools to sit for the Indiana bar.
Pritikin said the school is still waiting on a decision on its petition, which he said would be an important step in addressing the state’s lawyer shortage, especially for rural areas. Under current regulations, Concord Law graduates can only take the bar in California, where the school is based.
The Indianapolis Bar Association and Indiana State Bar Association are opposed to the rule change.
