Charles Goforth is charged with of first-degree murder in the death of Sylvia Williams. A relative on Wednesday found Williams, 55, dead in her mobile home from five gunshot wounds.
Goforth, 56, was charged with attempted murder for shooting Williams on Nov. 1. The shooting was captured on two surveillance video cameras. He was freed on a $7,945 bond and a judge allowed him to return home to Independence, Missouri, where he was arrested Thursday.
“Everyone dropped the ball on this,” said Williams’ daughter-in-law, Lolita Levingston. “She wasn’t protected.”
Lake County prosecutors say Goforth frequently called Williams to “smooth things over” because he didn’t want to go jail on the attempted murder charge.
Detectives say cellphone records tracked Goforth traveling from Missouri to the Hammond mobile home where Williams was killed. His vehicle allegedly was also recorded in Hammond by the city’s license plate readers.
Goforth is being held without bond in the Lake County Jail.
