“Limited operations at the FedEx Ground station resume on Wednesday … and will be gradually phased in over the coming weeks,” the company said in an email to IBJ. “Employees are being given the option to return to work at this time if they choose.”
Employees have been receiving pay during the closure based on their previous average hours worked, the company said.
The company also donated $1 million to establish the Indianapolis 4/15 Survivors Fund, which is raising money to benefit the families of the eight employees who died and others who suffered physical injuries or psychological trauma from the shooting.
The fund is being administered by the National Compassion Fund, a subsidiary of the Arlington, Virginia-based National Center for Victims of Crime, a not-for-profit organization. Donations are accepted via a GoFundMe account at https://www.gofundme.com/f/indianapolis-april-15th-survivors-fund.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the fund had raised just over $1.3 million.
The FedEx facility, at 8951 Mirabel Road, had been closed since Thursday night, when a man identified as 19-year-old former FedEx employee Brandon Scott Hole showed up and began shooting at people in the parking lot and then inside the facility. Hole killed himself at the scene.
The facility is a 300,000-square-foot package-sorting facility that has about 875 employees. FedEx Ground, a division of FedEx Corp, handles ground delivery of small packages to homes and businesses in the United States and Canada. The Mirabel Road facility is separate from FedEx’s larger nearby FedEx Express hub, 6648 Perimeter Road, at Indianapolis International Airport.
