A successor has been chosen to fill a vacancy in the Hamilton County judiciary left by retired Judge Gail Bardach.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced on Tuesday the appointment of attorney Stephenie K. Gookins as judge of Hamilton Superior Court No. 6.

Gookins succeeds Bardach, who retired July 1 after 22 years on the bench. Bardach announced her retirement in March.

Gookins, a partner at Terry & Gookins LLC, graduated from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1998. She has worked in private practice in Hamilton County since 2000 and as a public defender in various Hamilton County courts for more than 20 years.

Gookins will be sworn in at a date to be determined, according to Holcomb’s office.
