A pair of Hamilton County schools won the Indiana Bar Foundation’s High School and Middle School We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution state championships, held earlier in December.
Hamilton Southeastern High School emerged victorious in the high school competition and will represent Indiana in the national finals in the spring, according to a bar foundation release.
Fishers Junior High School won the middle school competition.
The We the People competition consists of simulated congressional hearings in which students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles through presenting their views on a specific topic and then defending their positions by answering questions from a panel of judges.
The annual competition was held at the Historic Union Station and Crowne Plaza Downtown Indianapolis.
Fishers High School finished second and Plainfield High School finished third in the high school competition, with 14 classes and 350 students taking part in the event.
Fall Creek Junior High School from Fishers placed second and Forest Ridge Academy from Schererville placed third in the middle school contest.
“We are thankful to our teachers, administrators, parents, school communities, volunteer judges, and those whose financial support allows the Foundation to provide We the People to more than 10,000 Indiana students annually,” Indiana Bar Foundation President and CEO Charles Dunlap said in a released statement.
Dunlap offered congratulations to the high school and middle school champions.
Unit awards were given to the following middle schools:
- Unit One: St. Richard’s Episcopal School
- Unit Two: Castle South Middle School
- Unit Three: Woodside Middle School
- Unit Four: Helfrich Park STEM Academy, Class A
- Unit Five: St. Malachy Catholic School
- Unit Six: Carroll Middle School, Culbertson
For competing high schools, unit awards were given to the following schools:
- Unit One: Homestead High School
- Unit Two: New Palestine High School
- Unit Three: Shepard Academy
- Unit Four: Castle High School
- Unit Five: Franklin Central High School
- Unit Six: Mississinewa High School
Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner was the keynote speaker at the middle school awards ceremony.
Indiana Supreme Court Justice Christopher Goff delivered the keynote speech at the high school ceremony.
