Judge Robert Miller Jr.

The Indiana Northern District Court will formally present a resolution to Senior Judge Robert Miller Jr. on Friday to celebrate the renaming of one of the South Bend courtrooms in his honor ahead of his retirement this month.

Miller, who was appointed in 1985 and is set to retire at the end of August, had the Robert Lowell Miller, Jr. Courtroom, the third-floor courtroom where he presides, named after him last year.

“The Court is deeply indebted to Judge Miller for his nearly four decades of service to the Court and the Community which it serves,” Chief Judge Holly Brady said in a statement. “Judge Miller has been a loyal friend and mentor to his colleagues and has always treated the lawyers who appear before him fairly and with respect. Most importantly, Judge Miller has been a champion for the rule of law. His wisdom and wit will be missed by all as he begins to enjoy his well deserved time with his family.”

A portrait and plaque honoring Miller have been placed outside the courtroom.

Before his appointment to the district court by President Ronald Reagan, Miller served as a St. Joseph Superior Court judge from 1975 through 1985. He was chief judge of that court from 1981 until 1983.

Miller also clerked for the Indiana Northern District Court.

He assumed senior status in 2016.

In 2020, Miller was appointed to a seven-year term on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review. He also served as chair of the Seventh Circuit Pattern Civil Jury Instructions Committee from 2002 to 2022.

Miller has served on committees including the Judicial Conference Committee on Judicial Resources and the board of directors for the Federal Judges’ Association.

Earlier this year, he received the American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Seventh Circuit at the court’s annual conference in Wisconsin.
