Indiana Bar Foundation awards more than $4.4M in grants, scholarships

The Indiana Bar Foundation awarded more than $4.4M to 12 Indiana organizations whose mission is to provide civil legal assistance to low income Hoosiers.

“I am thrilled to distribute these funds to organizations dedicated to supporting Hoosiers statewide and to help fund the education of tomorrow’s leaders,” Charles Dunlap, president & CEO of the Indiana Bar Foundation said in a news release. “Continually supporting the civil legal assistance community is a cornerstone of the Foundation’s mission.”

The foundation distributed $1.5M in Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts grants and $2.9M from the Civil Legal Aid Fund established in 1997.

The civil legal aid organizations receiving funding are:

  • Center for Victim and Human Rights Corporation
  • Child Advocates
  • Disability Legal Services of Indiana
  • Indiana Legal Services, Inc.
  • Indianapolis Legal Aid Society, Inc.
  • Legal Aid Corporation of Tippecanoe County
  • Legal Aid Society of Evansville
  • Metro Legal Clinic
  • Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic
  • Pro Bono Indiana
  • Volunteer Lawyer Program of Northeast Indiana, Inc.
  • Whitewater Valley Pro Bono Commission, Inc.

The foundation also distributed $10,000 among three scholarship recipients working to become tomorrow’s future leaders.

The Phelps & Fara Scholarship assists a law student enrolled at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law with an interest in family law.

The Hon. Cale J. Holder Scholarship assists an IU McKinney student demonstrating dedication to the administration of law, desire to be a practicing trial lawyer, capacity for leadership, academic achievement, and military service record, if any. This scholarship was given to two students.

Scholarship recipients are:

  • Aaliyah McGowan – Phelps & Fara Scholarship
  • Richard Brown – Hon. Cale J. Holder Scholarship
  • Adam Hall – Hon. Cale J. Holder Scholarship•
