The Indiana Bar Foundation announce the launch of the Indiana Kids Election program Wednesday.

The program is a way to teach students about voting by participating in a mock election process.

Indiana teachers can register their class to participate in the comprehensive program, which is designed to help students understand the critical role of voting in our democracy.

“As a leading advocate for improving civic education, we look forward to partnering with teachers and school districts across the state ahead of the election in November,” Charles Dunlap, president & CEO of the Indiana Bar Foundation, said in a press release. “By engaging students in the voting process at a young age, we hope to inspire them to build a habit of voting into adulthood.”

The program was initially piloted in 2022 with 22 schools registered for participation. The Indiana Bar Foundation is now expanding the program’s availability  to all school districts across the state.

The program meets the state’s requirements for civic education in classrooms.

The Indiana Bar Foundation will provide unique lesson plans, created by Indiana teachers, for teaching about elections in the classroom and an online voting simulation platform for teachers who register.

The mock election’s 2024 ballot will include presidential candidates, as well as Indiana candidates for governor, senate and attorney general.

The foundation was awarded a grant from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation to fund the Indiana Kids Election.
