The provision was removed from House Bill 1265 on the Senate floor without debate after being swiftly added just a week earlier.
The measure would have disqualified attorney general candidates who have been disbarred or suspended without automatic reinstatement within one year of the election.
Republicans said the measure wasn’t aimed at Attorney General Todd Rokita.
He was recently publicly reprimanded for misconduct, but such disciplinary action would not have disqualified him under the proposal. However, he faces other complaints that are working their way through the disciplinary process.
Rokita’s office issued a statement opposing the legislation, saying that “deep state players, like backroom legislators, are taking the peoples’ power away and giving it to secret committees who are accountable to no one.”
