An Indianapolis man faces more than two decades in prison after his sentencing for a November 2023 drunk driving incident that resulted in the deaths of two people.

Delaware County Circuit Court Judge Judi Calhoun sentenced Walter Saucedo-Mendoza, 32, to 24 years in prison Monday.

On Nov. 20,  Saucedo-Mendoza pleaded guilty as charged to two counts of causing death when operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration of .08 or more, both Level 4 felonies, as well as criminal recklessness, a Level 6 Felony.

Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hoffman said in a released statement, “I hope this sentence starts the process of closure for the family and friends of Evan and Victoria Cox and sends a very strong warning to those who chose to drink and drive. If you make that choice and you hurt or kill someone in this County, you will be zealously prosecuted.”

According to a probable cause affidavit, Indiana State Police responded to a fatal crash on Nov. 12, 2023, on I-69 near the 234-mile marker in Delaware County.

Saucedo-Mendoza’s toxicology report from his blood sample, which was taken at Ball Memorial Hospital after the crash, revealed a .186 BAC.

He was arrested in February at his Indianapolis address.
