Each year, the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Bar Leader Series provides a group of Indianapolis legal community rising stars with the tools and experiences to further their growth as future leaders of the organized bar and the Indianapolis community. Class XIX recently completed the course and celebrated their success while sharing details of the community service program they designed and staffed.

Through insight from and interaction with top leaders in our community, a skill building retreat and group discussion, class members have spent the past 12 months developing skills and have been cultivating the ability to motivate and inspire others.

The series was led by Christine Hickey of Rubin & Levin PC.

One important experience provided by the Bar Leader Series is the opportunity to develop, organize and complete a community service project as a team. Class XIX divided into subject-oriented work groups to conduct research to identify specific needs and challenges facing the community to cultivate a concrete project that directly addresses those needs in an active and sustainable way while partnering with a nonprofit organization. The class chose to focus their efforts on You Yes You!, the nonprofit recently selected by the Indianapolis Bar Foundation to receive their Community Empowerment Grant of $35,000.

You Yes You! is an Indianapolis-based nonprofit organization taking a holistic view of the relationship between inmates and their families. Their work aims to change the prison model and improve outcomes upon release. Bar Leader class members developed educational-informational workshops related to criminal law, employment law, landlord/tenant rights, parent rights and patient rights, and are implementing monthly opportunities with You Yes You! for incarcerated fathers to receive advice from bar leaders to provide them with a toolkit for managing such issues when they reenter their community.

The next Bar Leader Class will begin in September 2024. The application to participate is always available on the IndyBar website.

CORRECTION NOTE: The recent listing of Bar Leader Series Class XX failed to include Joey Wright of Kightlinger & Gray LLP. IndyBar regrets the error and looks forward to working with her and the entire class.•
