IndyBar: Honoring our IndyBar Members Who’ve Been Practicing for 50 Years

Congratulations to these IndyBar Members for this monumental achievement. These individuals were honored at our annual Recognition Breakfast. Lee Christie, the 2025 IndyBar Association President, celebrated each by reading these brief biographies written by fellow IndyBar members.

Steven D. Allen

Steve “Dirty” Allen was born and raised in Fort Wayne and attended Indiana University Bloomington. He refuses to disclose the nature of how he received that nickname, but several of you probably know. Steve graduated from Indiana University Indianapolis Law School in 1974. He was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1975 but never practiced law in Colorado. Soon after graduating he went into private practice with Kevin Farrell and John Commons before joining Rob Hammerle, Monica Foster, and Joe Cleary to practice criminal defense law. He has continued to practice criminal defense for 50 years. Steve has been a member of the Indianapolis Bar Association for 50 years. He is a member of the Federal Community Defender program with IFCD for his 50 years of practicing Criminal Defense law. Steve still enjoys helping people with their criminal problems but enjoys reading, hiking and traveling.

Frederick L. Baumgartner

Frederick Baumgartner has been a general practice attorney since October 1974 with a focus in trust and estate work. He lives here in Indy where he still practices law. He has a reputation for being honest, professional, reasonable and thoughtful with clients as well as colleagues. Previous clients have described Fred as “simply the best. He helped our dad set up everything and, when our dad passed, Mr. Baumgartner helped us carry out our dad’s final wishes. God bless attorneys like Mr. Baumgartner!”

D. Michael Bowman

Mike Bowman was born and raised in Indianapolis and graduated from North Central High School. At 17 years of age Mike enlisted in the Navy and served on the U.S.S. Odax, SS 484 as a radioman. After being honorably discharged, Mike attended IUPUI and then graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis in 1974. During law school Mike taught business and commercial law at IUPUI. Immediately upon passing the bar exam Mike hung out his shingle and maintained his sole practice his entire legal career. Mike has been married to Pamela Watkins for 41 years and he has one child, Caitlin, who resides in Colorado. Mike and Pam enjoy traveling and working in their garden.

James E. Carlberg

Jim Carlberg is an attorney at Bose McKinney & Evans and is the former chair of the firm’s Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Group. He represents commercial banks, savings and loans, life insurance companies, and other financial institutions dealing with State and Federal regulations. Jim is a Distinguished Fellow of the Indianapolis Bar Association as well as the Indianapolis Bar Foundation. Jim enjoys golf and traveling. He has been married to his wife, Donna, for 54 years and they have 3 children. Jim graduated from the Indiana University School of Business, with highest distinction, in 1972. He earned his juris doctorate from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law – Bloomington, cum laude, in 1974.

Roger Coffin

Roger Coffin resides in Martinsville, Indiana. He began his practice in criminal law until his Wife, Patty, graduated from law school. Upon Patty’s graduation, they began Coffin & Coffin assisting the senior community and disabled persons. Roger has represented people throughout the state and even makes house calls. Roger argued a case involving a catastrophically injured boy before the Indiana Court of Appeals and won – this ruling triggered a change in Indiana law on Special Needs Trusts. Roger is a proud Vietnam veteran, WWII collector and is very involved in the American Legion in Martinsville. If you can’t find Roger in his office, you may find him playing in his band with whom he has been with for many years. Roger performs under the alias “Lance Cameron.”

Grover B. Davis

Grover was born in Seymore Indiana and served in the US Army from 1963 to 1966. He graduated from Indiana University in 1968, before graduating from the Indiana University School of Law, Magna Cum Laude, in 1973. Grover worked as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Marion County before going into private practice with Hollingsworth and Davis for 10 years and then McClure, McClure and Davis where he still concentrates on Insurance defense, business law and litigation, personal injury, construction law and real estate law. He has been a long-time member of the Indianapolis Bar Association, the Association of Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana and the Defense Research Institute, Inc. Grover still enjoys the practice of law and spending time with his wife, Marion County Judge Angie Davis, as well as his two children, Hillary Griffith a judge in Roanoke, Virginia and Harrison Davis a college student at Rollins College.

Frederick W. Dennerline, III

Frederick Dennerline graduated from Duke University and then Indiana University – Indianapolis Law School. He began his legal career back in 1974 with Fillenwarth & Fillenwarth to represent the firm’s growing union pension and insurance trust funds practice. For more than 50 years Rick and Fillenwarth Dennerline Groth & Towe LLP represented labor unions, working Hoosiers and public interest organizations. Rick retired from law in September 2019. He lives in Indianapolis and has been active in the Democratic Party throughout the years. He serves his Duke alma mater interviewing prospective students. Rick has given much to our profession and the Hoosiers throughout the state.

C. David DuMond

Born in Chicago, in 1947, David graduated from Manchester College in 1969. He found his way to the Marion County justice system when his alternative service assignment was to the Marion County Juvenile Court, where he served as a guard at the detention center, then as a probation officer, 1969-1972. David began practicing law in Indianapolis in1974 but moved his practice to California in 1981. His practice experience includes serving as the Chief Deputy Commissioner for the Indiana Securities Division, investigating and prosecuting investment fraud cases and as counsel for several credit unions in California. After returning to Indiana, he served as Majority Counsel for the Indiana House of Representatives year 2000 session and has maintained a small private practice since then.

Kevin P. Farrell

Kevin Farrell was born and raised in Indianapolis and is a proud Eastside Catholic. Kevin attended Little Flower Grade School and Scecina High School where he was placed in the slow reading group by most of his teachers. Undeterred by his lack of academic prowess, Kevin later graduated from Marion College in 1971 and Indiana University Indianapolis Law School in 1974. Kevin has received numerous awards including president of his high school photography club; Altar Boy of the Year; and Captain of the Safety Patrol at Little Flower in 1960. He is a member of Sams Club and was recently notified he has been pre-approved for a Visa Platinum Card. Seriously, Kevin has been a stalwart plaintiffs’ lawyer for 45 years and has been my partner for 42 of those years. He is widely recognized for his CLE presentations and his ability to make lawyers laugh.

Robert G. Grant

Rob Grant is a graduate of Indiana University (economics) and is a graduate of its law school. He practices law with his wife, on the Northside of Indianapolis. Rob served as an instructor at Indiana University’s School of Continuing Studies for 18 years in the area of wills, trusts and estate planning and has served as an instructor in numerous continuing legal education courses in the areas of creditor’s rights, subrogation and probate. Rob has been an active member of the community having served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Greater Indiana Alzheimer’s Association. He is also a veteran of both the Army and Air Force.

Gregory Forrest Hahn

Greg Hahn is a partner at Bose McKinney & Evans and a principal of Bose Public Affairs Group. Greg has been chief deputy prosecutor for Marion County, Indiana and general counsel to CTS, Inc. He also served a special outside counsel for the U.S. Attorney’s Office from 1976-1980 and was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the SALT Treaty Committee for negotiations between Egypt and Israel. Greg also was aid to Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Warren Burger. Greg has received numerous honors and recognitions including the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Evan Bayh. He is very involved in the nonprofit community, either currently serving or formerly served as a member of numerous boards of directors. Greg graduated from the University of Evansville with a Bachelor of Arts in history and earned his JD from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law – Indianapolis.

William A. Hasbrook

Upon graduating from Notre Dame, Bill attended the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. He served briefly as both a Probate Commissioner and a Deputy Prosecutor. In 1973 he became a law clerk for the firm of Ruckelshaus, Bobbitt, and O’Connor. Bill spent his entire career with one firm, focused primarily on personal injury, probate, and general civil litigation. Active in many community endeavors, Bill served on the Board and as President of the Marquette Manor Foundation, as well as the Harborside Condominium Owners Association. A long-time member of St. Luke Catholic Church, he was also an avid member of the Adult Choir. He is a lifelong member of the Notre Dame Club and the Monogram Club. Bill has been married to his wife for over 53 years and has 3 kids and 10 grandchildren. Although he now spends much of his time at either Lake Wawasee or Siesta Key, he loved the practice of law and the company and collegiality of lawyers.

The Hon. Grant W. Hawkins

A long-time member of the Marion Superior Court, Judge Grant Hawkins began his legal career in 1974 with the firm of Samper Hawkins Atz & Reid where he practiced criminal defense law for 26 years before he became a judge in 2000. When he retired in 2022, Judge Hawkins was the longest serving major felony judge. He is a proud lifetime member of the Marion County Bar Association having served on their board of trustees. An active member of the IndyBar throughout his career, Judge Hawkins has served in leadership roles in a variety of committees and sections, as well as a member of the association’s board of directors. He could always be counted on to mentor young lawyers and invest in the future of our legal community. He earned his J.D. from the McKinney School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University.

Stephen L. Huddleston

Stephen Huddleston practices in the areas of General Civil Law, Trial law, Appellate Practice, Banking Law, Corporate Law, Zoning Law, Real Estate Law, and Probate Law. He currently serves as the general counsel for Franklin College and the Johnson County Election Board. Stephen is also an Adjunct Professor of Business and Business Law at Franklin College. He is admitted to practice in all state courts in Indiana; the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana; United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana; United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit; and the United States Supreme Court. Stephen graduated cum laude from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of and is highly regarded in his practice, holding leadership positions in the several statewide boards and entities. He was President of the Johnson County Bar Association, (1990). Stephen resides in Franklin, Indiana with his wife.

William E. Limeberry

Bill Limeberry is a graduate of Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis, and has practiced law in both Marion County and Johnson County, Indiana. Bill has had a diverse practice with a concentration on Occupational Safety & Health, Family Law, Divorce & Family Law, Criminal Law and Medical Malpractice, including wrongful death litigation. Bill practices in Greenwood, Indiana. We’ve been proud to have Bill as a member of our legal community.

Andrew C. Mallor

Andy Mallor was born and raised in Bloomington Indiana, married his high school sweetheart and has 2 children. Andy is a partner at Mallor Grodnera with offices in Bloomington and Indianapolis. He graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 1971 and Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington in 1974. Andy focuses his practices on family law. He was the first Indiana attorney inducted into the American College of Family Trial Lawyers and has been a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers since 1984. Andy is board certified in family law and has significant expertise in collaborative law. He enjoys teaching and is the chair of the annual Family Law Institute for ICLEF. Andy has invested in the mentoring of scores of young lawyers and has left a positive and lasting mark on the practice of law in our state.

Mary Y. Marsh

Mary Marsh arrived in Indianapolis in 1970 to attend Butler University, sight unseen. Fortunately, she liked what she saw and never left Indianapolis. Mary began her professional career with Merchants Bank (now PNC Bank) as a support staff member and after graduation from what’s now the McKinney School of Law, Mary continued working for the bank, dedicating her legal career to trust administration. In 2001, Mary retired from the bank as senior vice president and manager of the Trust Administration Group, after an impressive 32-year career. She is a past recipient of the IndyBar Women and the Law Division’s Antoinette Dakin Leach Award for outstanding career accomplishments, but most notably Mary was a true trailblazer serving as the first female president of IndyBar in 1989. She kicked open the door that has brought our bar countless, outstanding female lawyer leaders and set an example of excellence.

Danny E. Meek

Danny (that is his legal name, not Daniel) graduated from Indiana University Indianapolis in 1974. Danny taught at Howe High School while he was in Law School. He was one of the founding partners of Hollingsworth and Meek where he practiced with Dave Hollingsworth for 20 years. Danny has been a member of both the Indiana State Bar Association and Indianapolis Bar Association for 50 years. Danny then became a legal consultant in Florida until the present day where he advises new businesses on business structures and commercial transactions. Danny is married to Connie and continues to work and thrive in Florida, dodging hurricanes.

Judith G. Palmer

Judy grew up in Montgomery County Indiana and graduated from Indiana University in 1970 and Indiana University School of Law Indianapolis in 1974. Judy worked for 3 Indiana Governors, Whitcomb, Bowen and Orr as executive assistant for Health under Governor Bowen and the State Budget Director for Governor Orr before becoming the chief financial officer for Indiana University where she served under 6 presidents. Judy was awarded the President’s Medal for Excellence in 2007 and the Bicentennial Medal in 2019 by Indiana University. She currently serves on the Board of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and donates her time to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

Linda L. Pence

Linda graduated from Indiana University in 1971 and the Indiana University School of Law in 1974. Linda was a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice from 1974 – 1983 handling complex civil and regulatory issues and white collar prosecutions. Linda was also a candidate for Indiana Attorney General in 2008. Her private practice has focused on white collar crimes and fraud. Linda has generously given her time and talent to many local charitable organizations and has been recognized with many awards and honors. We thank you Linda for an outstanding career.

Fred Pfenninger

Fred Pfenninger graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and was admitted to the Bar in 1974. Before retiring in 2023, Fred had a career in private practice in the areas of creditor’s rights, commercial collections, debt and lending agreements, foreclosure law, and appellate law. Most of his career was spent as the founding partner in the firm Pfenninger & Associates. Fred’s career included memberships in several organizations, among them the National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys, the Commercial Law League of America, and vice-president of the Indiana Creditors Bar Association. Fred has been a central figure in the Commercial and Bankruptcy Law Section and given freely of his time and expertise.

David L. Rimstidt

Dave Rimstidt graduated from Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1974. Prior to law school, he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Administration from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 1971. His career in law has had a variety of turns including service as a Marion Superior Court Judge. After leaving the bench he served as Chief Deputy Prosecutor of the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, which he retired from in 2018. This was David’s second stint of service with the prosecutor’s office having also worked as trial counsel there in the 1970’s. Prior to his retirement, he was a mediator, arbitrator, special master, and private judge, specializing in complex litigation for Van Winkle Batten Rimstidt Dispute Resolution, Inc.

Roscoe Stovall, Jr.

Ross attended my alma mater, Arlington High School in Indianapolis where he was in the first full graduating class at Arlington in 1965. Ross attended Indiana University Law School-Indianapolis. Ross has been a private practitioner since 1974 in Mooresville and Indianapolis and was previously of counsel at Poynter and Bucheri. He currently practices at Stovall and Associates. Roscoe has no slowdown in sight.

L. Craig Turner

Craig Turner currently practices civil litigation, commercial, criminal, traffic law, probate and estate administration. He joined the Indiana Bar in 1974 and is admitted before the U.S. Supreme Court, the 7th and Federal Circuit Courts of Appeals, and the U.S. Tax Court. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Indianapolis Bar Foundation and a U.S. Army veteran. He is proud of his long involvement with the Indianapolis Bar Association, and IndyBar is grateful for him.

Victoria Ursulskis

Vickie’s practice centers on criminal law, labor and employment, and appellate practice. She is a graduate of Rosary College, and a 1974 graduate of Indiana University School of Law. Victoria appeared as counsel in many cases in Indiana’s southern district. Regarded as a mentor by several well-known criminal law attorneys, Vickie is known for her willingness to assist and the. Vickie has made quite an impact in the Indianapolis legal community.

Albert Joseph Velasquez

Albert Velasquez is an administrative law judge in the Indianapolis Office of Disability Adjudication and Review, and one of the first Hispanic graduates of Indiana University Maurer School of Law. Albert attended Loyola University of Chicago from 1962 to 1964 and the Indiana University School of Business (today the Kelley School of Business) from 1965 to 1967, earning a Bachelor of Science in business insurance. He graduated from Indiana University Law School in 1973 and served as Assistant Attorney General in Arizona for 2 years. Velasquez served in Vietnam in artillery units, eventually earning the rank of captain. In 1996, he retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel and as the chief military judge of the Indiana National Guard. His community activity includes service as a board member and president of the Monroe County Community Kitchen, as a board member of the Bloomington chapter of the American Red Cross and past president of the Bloomington Chapter of the Indiana Universiyt Varsity Club. He is a member of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law Latino Alumni Advisory Board.

Russell M. Webb, Jr.

Russell Webb, Jr. graduated from what is now the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1974. Prior to law school, Russell was drafted and served for two years in the Army. After spending a few years as a real estate developer with a law license, Russell opened his own firm and has spent most of his career in private practice, concentrating on the areas of real estate and probate law.

Larry F. Whitham

Larry Whitham graduated from what is now the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1974. Larry began his career working as a staff attorney in Indianapolis City government but has spent most of his career in private practice, most recently as a partner in the law firm of Whitham & Zubek. Larry’s practice covers estate planning, probate, family law, personal injury, civil litigation, criminal law, and expungements. From 1975 until 1999 Larry was a reservist, serving as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force. Larry has been recognized as the Air Force Officer of the Year and is a Distinguished Fellow of the Indianapolis Bar Foundation.•
