How long have you been a Marion Superior Court judge?
I was elected on Nov. 4, 2014. I have eight years of judicial experience.
Other projects, committees or service roles you are involved in off the bench?
I am currently on the Marion County Executive Committee, chair of the Marion County Probation Committee for six years, 2024 IndyBar Bench Bar co-chair, Lake Kesslerwood East Board of Directors, Social Committee chair Lake Kesslerwood East, and am on the Raquets Committee at Woodstock.
Best tip you have for lawyers appearing in your court or criminal law courts in general?
Talk to your client before court and act prepared. Listen. Don’t be afraid to go to trial. Give every client and their family your cel phone number and communicate with them always and often. Also learn the rules of evidence inside and out. Be happy.
Your mentor(s) and the greatest insight you gained from them?
Bill Marsh, Fran Hardy Watson and Richard Kammen. They each taught me in different ways: a love for criminal law, how to win cases, the rules of evidence, fight hard for your clients, communicate with your clients by being available by phone, text or email (don’t avoid the hard conversations), be honest with your clients, command respect from your clients early and they will listen to you when the case gets tough, be nice and respectful, and the greatest gift was to never give up.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Tennis and racquet sports, being a mom, being outside, and if I’m being truly honest, shopping.
If you weren’t a judge, what would you be doing?
I’d start a career in decorating, move to Florida, play tennis, go to the beach and lounge by the pool.•
