Subscriber Benefit
As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowPro bono service is a rewarding — and expected — component of the practice of law. It won’t be long before Indiana attorneys will be reporting to the Indiana Supreme Court time and/or dollars contributed to support pro bono efforts. IndyBar’s association and foundation make it easy to show your support.
IndyBar offers opportunities that fit varied schedules, practice areas and interests. All the bar’s pro bono programs are funded by the Indianapolis Bar Foundation. Because the need is great, volunteers are always being sought for three IndyBar pro bono programs that allow members to choose to dedicate just an hour or two or a longer-term commitment. Check out details below and contact Kari Hartman at [email protected] for more information. Ready to volunteer? Just access the signup at indybar.org/probono.
Legal Line (telephone based at IndyBarHQ)
A small time commitment, big impact — answer basic legal questions from the public at the IndyBar’s Ask a Lawyer program. Our attorney volunteers give the public legal advice over the phone on the second Tuesday of each month except December from 6-8 p.m. Advice only. Dinner and a copy of our publication, “Commonly Asked Questions About Indiana Law,” are provided for all volunteers. The resource guide helps in assisting with questions on divorce, guardianship, child custody, child support, landlord/tenant issues, bankruptcy, personal injury, criminal law, employment law and more.
Virtual Help Desk (online-only format)
The pandemic caused IndyBar to rethink the method in which volunteers can provide direct legal advice to the public, so a virtual help desk (chat line) was the answer. Accessed by the public on the homepage of the IndyBar’s website, IndyBar attorney volunteers staff the desk’s online chat 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday for one hour or more time slots. This is an excellent way to gain pro bono hours while safely rendering advice remotely from the location of your choosing.
Free Wills Clinic (in-person event)
Draft wills and advance directives for low-income families most in need. The next workshop clinic will be held in the fall. It’s also a limited time commitment. All necessary forms and office supplies are provided by IndyBar. The financial need of clients served is verified in advance and appointments are set. The location of the clinic is convenient for the public.
