Senior Judge Kathleen Lang was appointed judge pro tempore in Lake Superior Court, Civil Division 6 Tuesday following the approval of Judge Gina L. Jones to assume the duties of Lake Superior Court, Criminal Division 3.
Jones was transferred to the late Judge Diane Boswell’s court, Criminal Division 3, following Boswell’s sudden death in October.
Lang’s temporary appointment to the Criminal Division 6 bench will begin December 20 and continue until further order of the high court, the justices announced in In the Matter of the Appointment of a Judge Pro Tempore in the Lake Superior Court, Civil Div. 6, 21S-MS-559.
The order will be sufficient authority for Lang to continue the employment of court personnel and otherwise discharge the duties of the judge. She will be compensated at the same rate as the regular judge commencing from the effective date of her appointment.
Meanwhile, the Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission selected five local attorneys from 12 candidates as finalists to fill the vacancy on the Lake Superior Court, Civil Division Room 6 on Monday. The finalists include Rehana Adat-Lopez, Gary Bell, Carly Brandenburg, Shontrai Irving, and Jamise Perkins.
The names of the five finalists will be submitted to Gov. Eric Holcomb, who will make the final selection of the county’s next judge. At the same time, a federal lawsuit is challenging the county’s judicial selection procedures.
