The merger, effective Jan. 1, 2025, combines the Chicago firm’s 25 legal professionals with DeVault’s existing team, bringing the latter’s Chicago presence to nearly 40 professionals.
Krieg DeVault is the ninth largest law firm in the Indianapolis area, according to research from the Indianapolis Business Journal, with 68 local attorneys. In addition to its office in Indianapolis, the firm has a presence in Carmel, Crown Point, and Mishawaka.
In 2007, Krieg DeVault opened its office in Chicago. Fuchs & Roselli’s Chicago roots date back 35 years, and its merger with Krieg is expected to boost the firm’s key service areas of business and corporate law, banking, real estate, litigation, and estate planning, according to a news release.
“We share the same vision and values, and so that made working through all the aspects that you have to consider in a combination easy to do between the two parties,” said Michael Messaglia, managing partner at Krieg DeVault.
The deal also supports the Chicago firm, offering more depth in certain specialties.
“I think our clients will benefit from their deep bench and kind of the full-service depth that Krieg DeVault offers,” said Dave Buetow, a partner at Fuchs & Roselli. “And we jumped at the opportunity to expand our services to our current and future clients in Chicago and beyond.”
While Messaglia did not disclose any other mergers on the horizon, he said mergers are part of the firm’s strategy.
“Our strategy is not to grow just for the sake of growth,” he said. “Our strategy is to be strategic with the opportunities that are available to us, and this fit our strategy to increase our presence in the Chicago market.”
