Why did you decide to enter the legal profession?

I worked professionally immediately after undergrad rather than going directly to law school. After working for a few years, I wanted to pursue a career in sports law. I decided to go to law school to give myself more career options and to explore the opportunity of a career in sports.

If you hadn’t pursued a legal career, what would you be doing?

I majored in logistics and transportation at the University of Tennessee, and I worked in that field prior to entering law school. If I had not decided to pursue a legal career, I probably would have continued my career as a supply chain professional. I may have also attempted to start a logistics company or become a real estate investor.

Who is someone who has inspired you in your career?

My family. They have always had my back and encouraged me to do my best. They are understanding of my schedule, the long hours and relatively frequent travel. I am also inspired to be successful and serve as a positive role model for my three sons.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

I put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed and advance in my career as quickly as possible. I think the best advice I have received is to slow down and take time to enjoy where I am and what I have accomplished.

What makes a good lawyer/judge?

A good judge must have a blend of integrity, intellect, impartiality and empathy. Of all these characteristics, I think integrity may be the most important. Without integrity, there is a risk of bias, corruption or favoritism clouding the judge’s decisions, which will undoubtedly erode public confidence in the fairness and impartiality of the legal process.

What is something you wish people knew about lawyers?

One aspect I wish more people understood about lawyers is the diversity within the legal profession. Due to popular television shows, some people believe attorneys only focus on litigation. However, there are many legal specialties and roles beyond the courtroom. For example, legal work may range from areas such as corporate law or intellectual property to human rights advocacy and environmental law. Lawyers may also serve as negotiators, mediators and policymakers, playing critical roles in various sectors of society. The practice of law is truly a diverse profession.

Tell us about a “lesson learned” moment you’ve had in your career.

One of the most significant was learning that I must balance priorities. I regularly have to balance multiple cases, deadlines and responsibilities (including personal responsibilities at home). While I have not mastered the art of balance, I believe learning to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively and maintain a healthy work-life balance has been essential to my success and well-being.

Tell us something surprising about you.

I love motorcycles, and I used to drive a Suzuki GSXR 750.
