Marion Superior Court

University of Missouri School of Law, 2002

Why did you decide to enter the legal profession?

I announced in elementary school that I was going to be a lawyer. I honestly do not know where I came up with the idea. I did not know any lawyers personally. Maybe it was from watching “Matlock” or “Perry Mason” on the television. However, the declaration of an elementary-aged child stuck. I ultimately went to law school to help people that could not help themselves.

If you hadn’t pursued a legal career, what would you be doing?

I have always had a passion for crime and the criminal justice system. Had I not pursued a legal career, I would have pursued a career in forensic pathology.

Who is someone who has inspired you in your career?

Former Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry. While serving as Terry’s chief counsel, I had a front-row seat to watch his leadership, his passion for the law and for the people that worked for him. He was intentional in his relationships with each employee and thoughtful about each decision he made. As high as he held the office and the important work that legal professionals do, he always maintained a family-first position. He mentored and lifted up the attorneys that worked for him even after they left the office and pursued other careers. He truly made a difference in his community and the legal profession is better because of him. I am grateful for his leadership, mentorship and friendship.

What makes a good lawyer/judge?

A good lawyer or judge is someone who is prepared, honest, treats people respectfully and is reasonable.

What is something you wish people knew about lawyers?

Just because lawyers may represent opposite positions in court does not mean that they are not friends outside of the courtroom. Many of us are not general practitioners and, therefore, are not experts in every area of the law.

Tell us about a “lesson learned” moment you’ve had in your career.

It is OK to prioritize yourself and say no sometimes. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is important for a successful career and home life.

Tell us something surprising about you.

I love a good Broadway musical. I have seen “The Lion King” on Broadway twice. Both times I was able to go backstage after the show. I have shared this love of musicals with my now 15-year-old son. He played Simba in “The Lion King JR” in 2023.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Surround yourself with people who raise your standards, remind you of your purpose and challenge you to be the best you can be.
