Evan Terhune died Tuesday afternoon at Deaconess Midtown hospital and an autopsy is pending, said Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear.
Police said Terhune reportedly became violent at a Saturday gathering where those in attendance told police the hallucinogenic drug LSD was used, the Evansville Courier & Press reported.
Evansville Police Department spokesman Sgt. Nick Winsett said an officer had to use a Taser to subdue Terhune while taking him into custody but no other force was used.
Video shared by police showed Terhune was agitated and slamming himself against the walls of a police wagon after being taken into custody, Winsett said. At one point, he rammed his head into the vehicle.
“Obviously he was on something very, very powerful. There is a large dent in the side of a patrol car where he rammed his head,” Winsett said
After being placed in custody, Terhune continued to act erratically and he was eventually transported to the hospital for treatment, where he later died, Winsett said.
During the same disturbance at the gathering, a person in attendance was accidentally shot in the leg by another person who was apparently acting in self-defense against Terhune, Winsett said.
