The man, 33-year-old Aung Aung, was also convicted of carrying a handgun without a license earlier in the year.
On Aug. 27, 2021, officers were called to the 7000 block of Hackberry Court for a shots fired report.
At the scene, officers located Aung, who continued to fire shots and refuse officers’ commands to put the gun down. He eventually started firing shots at an officer, according to police reports.
Officers fired in return and Aung was hit. While on the ground, Aung continued to ignore commands to drop the gun.
He eventually dropped the gun and was taken into custody.
Of the 25-year sentence, three years are suspended, and Aung earned 934 days of jail credit. Two years of the sentence will be served on probation, giving him 20 years in prison.
His one-year sentence for carrying a handgun without a license will be served concurrently with the attempted murder sentence.
“The defendant’s actions not only endangered the lives of the responding officers but the lives of nearby neighbors,” stated Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears in a release. “We will not tolerate violence against law enforcement officers or community members and this significant sentence is a testament to that commitment.”
