A man has been sentenced to 60 years in the Indiana Department of Correction for his role in the 2023 shooting death of a man in Indianapolis, according to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

In June, Howard Moffitt was found guilty by a jury trial of murder and a habitual offender sentencing enhancement.

His sentence includes 52 years for murder and eight years for being a habitual offender.

“This conviction and the enhanced sentence affirm our commitment to justice on behalf of victims and send a clear message that this level of violence will not be tolerated in our community,” said Prosecutor Ryan Mears.

On July 20, 2023, police were dispatched to the 700 block of North Meridian Street for reports of a person shot.

When officers arrived, they found Anthony Drummer suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He died at the scene.

Moffitt told police that he shot Drummer and the weapon was in his backpack. He also confessed to a witness that he committed the crime.

Video footage near the scene placed Moffitt in the area soon after the shooting.

Forensic testing confirmed the gun in Moffitt’s backpack was used on Drummer.
