The existing Morgan Co. courthouse.

Morgan County will break ground Monday on a new $45 million judicial building, marking the first step of a $72 million judicial campus project.

The new judicial building will be adjacent to the existing administration building, a block from downtown Martinsville and the historic courthouse on Main Street.

The existing courthouse was built in 1857 and currently is home to the superior and circuit courts. Once the new three-story judicial building is constructed, the county will remodel the existing courthouse to provide office space for professionals who currently work in the administration building and other buildings throughout downtown Martinsville.

Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore Roderick Bray, R-Martinsville, and former Morgan County judge Peter Foley, now of the Court of Appeals of Indiana, along with Morgan County commissioners and the Morgan County Council will give keynote addresses at the groundbreaking ceremony, which will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at 180 S. Main St. in Martinsville.

The county is pursuing the $72 million project because the existing courthouse lacks space for many court employees, including those in the prosecutor and probation offices. There is also no separate entrance for court defendants or secure corridors, and most courtrooms lack accessibility.

The first phase of construction is expected to last until early 2025.

Indiana Lawyer will be present at the Monday groundbreaking. Check back with our website Tuesday for coverage.
