A cafe, an Italian restaurant, a nail salon and now the new office of Indianapolis-based Paganelli Law Group all reside on the courthouse square in Bloomington.

“We wanted our staff and paralegals to land in a good place,” PLG Partner Angela Parker said.

Parker was part of Carmin Parker P.C. Attorneys at Law with Michael Carmin in Bloomington until PLG took over the practice on April 8.

PLG’s Bloomington office is in the old location of Carmin Parker P.C. on 6th St. in downtown Bloomington.

Carmin Parker P.C. closed its firm and PLG took over its three attorneys and three paralegals.

The Indianapolis office has 22 lawyers.

One of the practice areas that PLG can now offer in Bloomington is employment work since Carmin Parker was focused on real estate and civil litigation.

Parker described the transition as teaching “old dogs new tricks.”

She said it’s been an adjustment learning the different technology systems and the way PLG files paperwork and does billing.

Parker said she and Carmin always anticipated retiring after having 30 years of practice and enjoyed how they ran their firm.

When their Carmin Parker practice came close to reaching 30 years, clients began asking questions and both attorneys realized that maybe just abruptly retiring wasn’t a good idea.

Parker called her old law school friend Tony Paganelli.

She said joining his practice felt like the perfect fit.

“He thought it sounded like a good idea, and we thought it was a good idea,” Parker said.

While Parker and Paganelli have been friends for over three decades, the conversation about her firm joining PLG didn’t start until about a year ago.

“She approached me about the notion of opening a Bloomington office, and having her and Mike and their staff come on board and join us over the next several years so they can continue practicing. But maybe start slowing down a little bit without worrying about the administrative burden of running a law firm,” Paganelli said.

Paganelli said that it opens up practice areas and resources for both firms.

“We’re giving them new practice areas, new support, some new bench strength, and they’re giving our lawyers additional opportunities to serve new clients in new markets,” Paganelli said.

He added that he fell in love with Bloomington when he attended Indiana University Mauer School of Law.

“If we’re going to have a chance to expand the footprint of our firm, there’s no place out there that makes better sense than Bloomington,” Paganelli said. “So I’m really excited, not just by the growth opportunities for my firm, but also by the fact that I get to become a part of the community in Bloomington again.”•
