Four deputies with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the home in Floyds Knobs about 1 a.m. to find an “ongoing domestic situation” between a woman and her husband, Indiana State Police Sgt. Carey Huls said in a news release.
The deputies were speaking to the couple when the man “walked away from the door and returned with a shotgun,” Huls said. Deputies repeatedly ordered the man to drop the gun before at least one officer opened fire, striking the man, he said.
No deputies were injured.
Officers rendered first-aid at the scene before the man was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, where Huls said he was listed in critical condition.
Huls said that after the shooting the man was found to also have a handgun in his possession.
State police are investigating the shooting. Huls said the deputies were either not wearing their body cameras or did not have them turned on, so there was no police video of the shooting.
The shooting occurred at a residence in the unincorporated community near New Albany.
