As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowPurdue University’s chief legal officer was arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to Tippecanoe County Jail logs.
Steven Schultz was booked at 5:12 a.m. on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.15 or more. Under Indiana law, 0.08 is considered intoxicated.
“The Purdue Board of Trustees and executive leadership are aware of the incident involving General Counsel Steve Schultz who was arrested Dec. 11 on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated,” Purdue spokeswoman Erin Murphy said in an email. “Purdue will address the matter pursuant to our applicable personnel policies.”
Schultz joined the university in 2013. He also was the top lawyer for Mitch Daniels’ transition into the Indiana governor’s office in 2005 and served as general counsel under Daniels at Purdue University, where he guided the completion of the school’s acquisition of Kaplan University, now Purdue Global.
Schultz could not immediately be reached for comment. He is scheduled to appear in Tippecanoe Superior Court on Feb. 3 at 8:30 a.m.
Schultz was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1993 following his graduation from the University of Cambridge where he earned his LLM. He earned his JD from Yale Law School.
Schultz has no previous history with the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission, according to the Indiana Roll of Attorneys.
