The verdict drew gasps and sobs from the families of the victims and defendant. It came after nearly 19 total hours of deliberations and 18 days of testimony in a Carroll County Courthouse trial that garnered international attention and intense media coverage across the state.
The jury’s decision convicted Allen of the murders of 14-year-old Liberty German and 13-year-old Abigail Williams, who were found dead near the Monon High Bridge Trail in Delphi one day after they had gone for a hike during an unseasonably warm spell in February 2017.
While the case garnered widespread attention ever since the crime occurred, it took investigators more than five years to make an arrest.
Allen, a former local pharmacy technician, stood trial just a few miles from where the girls went missing, in front of a full courtroom of family, attorneys, and the media.
He was found guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of felony murder.
His sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 20. He could face up to 130 years in prison.
A gag order previously imposed by Special Judge Frances Gull prevented prosecutors, defense attorneys, police and the families from commenting on the case after the verdict was announced.
