Many courts across central and southern Indiana were closed Monday due to a winter storm across the area.

The U.S. District Court in Indianapolis and the Marion County circuit, superior, and small claims courts all were closed as the city continued to see snowfall Monday morning, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported.

Local courts and county government offices also are closed in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Morgan and Shelby counties.

The Indiana Supreme Court and Indiana Court of Appeals were open, though many staffers were working remotely, court officials said.

Indiana Legal Services, Inc. has also closed its physical locations in Bloomington, Evansville, Indianapolis, and New Albany. Staff is working remotely and will be available to clients.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning is in place in the lower half of the state until 7 p.m. Monday evening.

By mid-morning Monday, four to eight inches of snow had fallen across much of the region. Wind gusts are up to 40 mph, with an additional two inches of snow expected and ice accumulations around a light glaze.

The weather services is asking residents to delay all travel if possible. If traveling, residents should expect slippery roads and reduced visibility. Strong winds and the weight of the snow could down power lines near trees, causing outages.

These conditions are expected to impact the evening commute.
