State reports 476 more COVID-19 cases, 7 more deaths

The Indiana State Department of Health on Monday said the number of positive cases for COVID-19 in the state has risen to 11,686, following the emergence of 476 more cases.

New reported cases were down from 569 on Sunday, 487 on Saturday and 613 on Friday.

The state said Monday that the cumulative death toll in the state rose to 569, up from 562 the previous day — an increase of seven deaths. The number of deaths reported Monday is the lowest daily toll in nearly three weeks and follows declining fatalities reported in recent days.

Deaths and positive cases are not always reported to the department immediately, which means the numbers can move inconsistently day to day. The department reported the state’s first case on March 6.

The state reported that 64,639 people have been tested so far, up from 61,142 in Sunday’s report — an increase of 3,497 tests.

The ISDH said the test numbers reflect only those tests reported to the department and the numbers should not be characterized as a comprehensive total.

Marion County reported 4,052 cumulative cases — up from 3,889 the previous day, an increase of 163 cases.

The state reported 192 cumulative deaths in Marion County, the same number as in Sunday’s report. The state said 19,206 people have been tested in the county.

As for surrounding counties, Hamilton had 598 positive cases; Johnson 426; Hendricks 499; Madison 340; Boone 154; Hancock 150;  Morgan 119; and Shelby 111.

Every Indiana county has at least one case.

Elsewhere in Indiana, these counties have more than 100 reported cases: Lake (1,182), St. Joseph (412), Allen (325), Porter (180), Clark (177), Decatur (168), Elkhart (164), Floyd (142), Bartholomew (140), LaPorte (140), Delaware (114), Monroe (114) and Harrison (101).

The department said 47.5% of the state’s intensive care unit beds were still available. About 23% are being used by COVID-19 patients.

The department also said 77.6% of the state’s ventilators were available.

The health department is providing case updates daily at noon based on results received through 11:59 p.m. the previous day.

Health officials say Indiana has far more coronavirus cases—possibly thousands more—than those indicated by the number of tests.

As of Monday morning, 760,570 cases had been reported in the United States, with 40,702 deaths, according to a running tally maintained by health researchers at Johns Hopkins University & Medicine. More than 71,000 people have recovered.

More than 2.42 million cases have been reported globally, with 166,794 deaths. More than 636,100 people have recovered.
