The previous high was 946 on April 27 — a number that included more than 400 cases in Cass County stemming from an outbreak at a meat-processing plant.
The state has now reported more than 600 cases daily for the past 10 days. Total positive cases in the state since the beginning of the pandemic have risen to 59,602.
The state also reported 17 new deaths Thursday, bring the total to 2,683.
Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb cited rising COVID-19 positivity rates Wednesday when said he would issue a statewide mask mandate. Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill immediately issued an official opinion saying Holcomb lacked authority to enforce such a mandate.
Thursday’s daily update from the Indiana Department of Health pushed the number of confirmed cases in the state to 59,602, based on information received through 11:59 Wednesday.
Marion County had 13,245 cases, followed by Lake (6,469), Elkhart (4,189), Allen (3,245), St. Joseph (2,650), Hamilton (2,082), Cass (1,692), Hendricks (1,594), Johnson (1,491) and Vanderburgh (1,289). Every county in Indiana has at least 18 reported cases.
At least 100 people have died from COVID-19 in Marion County (711), Lake (259), Allen (149), Hendricks (105) and Hamilton (103) counties, according to the Health Department.
Meanwhile, even as the number of tests rose to 666,283, Indiana’s positivity rate Thursday was 8.9% — a rate higher than the seven-day average any time since mid-May, according to data tracked by the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.
