The National Judicial College named Tavitas one of its 2023 60 Courageous Judges Honorees.
She is one of 60 judges chosen from past and present courts in the United States and abroad who have demonstrated courage in upholding the rule of law and providing justice for all.
The honorees were selected from nominations by NJC alumni and staff.
Tavitas was appointed to the appellate bench by Gov. Eric Holcomb in 2018.
Before that, she served more than 12 years as judge of the Lake Superior Court. She has also worked as a deputy prosecutor, a public defender and in private practice.
She is a 1990 graduate of Notre Dame Law School.
Tavitas is a member of several national, state and local bar associations. She has served as a moot court judge for the Notre Dame Law School Trial Advocacy Program, and as a judge for the “We the People” Program sponsored by the Indiana Bar Foundation.
She is also an adjunct professor at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
