The Indiana Supreme Court has appointed a temporary judge to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Marion Superior Court Judge Cynthia J. Ayers.

Senior Judge David A. Shaheed will be serving as judge pro tempore in Marion Superior Court 4 starting on April 8.

Shaheed served as a Marion Superior Court judge from 2003 to 2014.

Ayers retired on March 15 after serving on the bench for 32 years.

She graduated from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1982. From 2008-2011 she taught as an adjunct professor at the law school.

Ayers made history as the first African-American female president of the Indianapolis Bar Association in 2006.

Ayers was granted senior judgeship on Feb. 14.

The Marion County Judicial Selection Committee is currently accepting applications for Ayers’ vacancy. Applications are due by noon April 12.

Applicants must be a resident of Marion County and an attorney admitted to the Indiana bar for at least five years.

The committee will be holding public interviews on April 26. Following the interviews, the committee will go into executive session to consider the applicants and then publicly vote to select a panel of three nominees to send to Gov. Eric Holcomb for appointment.
