The Indiana Senate honored the state’s second Indiana Tax Court judge with a resolution Tuesday, as senators and Indiana Supreme Court justices gathered to recognize former Indiana Tax Court Judge Martha Blood Wentworth.

The Senate unanimously passed a concurrent resolution saluting Wentworth for her 12 years on the bench.

Wentworth, now a senior judge, announced her retirement in April 2023.

Judge Justin McAdam was named as her successor.

Sen. Eric Koch, R-Bedford, read Senate Concurrent Resolution 12 honoring Wentworth.

Sen. Eric Koch

Koch mentioned Wentworth’s educational background, first at Bennett College and then at Indiana University and the IU Maurer School of Law.

Wentworth served for two years as a law clerk for former Indiana Tax Court Judge Thomas Fisher, followed by six years as an attorney for Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman and 12 years leading Indiana multistate tax services at Deloitte Tax.

Then in 2011, on the appointment of former Gov. Mitch Daniels, she became the Tax Court judge — the first woman, and only the second person, to serve in that role.

The senator noted Wentworth has been the recipient of the Lawrence L. Lasser Tax Judge of the Year Award and Indiana State Bar Association service award, and was been named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Eric Holcomb in 2023.

From her appointment to her retirement last year, Wentworth wrote 206 opinions while on the bench.

Koch described Wentworth was a staunch advocate for tax education and noted that she has served as an educator on state and local tax law, teaching as an adjunct professor at the IU Kelley School of Business for 14 years, the IU McKinney School of Law for three years and the IU Maurer School of Law for one year.

Indiana Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray

Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray, R-Martinsville, noted Wentworth had devotes much of her lengthy career to tax issues, including now as a senior judge on the Tax Court.

“We’re grateful to the service you’ve given Indiana,” Bray said.
