IndyBar leadership is closely monitoring the rapidly changing situation involving COVID-19 (coronavirus). To ensure the health and well-being of IndyBar members and staff, IndyBar will postpone and reschedule all in-person events at least through April 10, 2020.
Seven women from different walks of life — and legal practices — gathered recently to reminisce on a literary journey they’ve come to cherish. As of January 1, 2020, a brand new Indiana Supreme Court rule went into effect granting the opportunity for certain qualifying attorneys to hold a Pro Bono Publico License and serve as pro bono counsel. The rule covers certain types of Indiana and out-of-state attorneys who are not actively admitted to practiced law under Indiana’s general rules of admission, but who are otherwise in “good standing” with the bar of this or another state.

Each year, the Women and the Law Division presents its Mentorship Award, which seeks to honor a female legal professional who’s exhibited exceptional efforts to be a mentor to other women in the profession. This year, the division has selected Germaine Willett of Ice Miller LLP as the honorable recipient.
The would-be angler Marvin Mears took an unexpected trip to the Supreme Court of Indiana after he caught a fish without bait. The law in Indiana said that “[i]t shall be unlawful for any person to take . . . or attempt to take . . . any fish in the waters of this state . . . by any means other than angling with hook and line.” Mr. Mears didn’t reasonably believe that the Indiana General Assembly intended to outlaw his scheme. He was “angling with hook and line” after all. Or so he thought.

Effective immediately, attorney members in practice eight or fewer years pay just $20 per credit hour at any one of the IndyBar’s more than 150 CLE programs held annually.
Unbeknownst to many, a few loyal members and the IndyBar staff have been busy moving all of us. The IndyBar’s lease on the 15th floor of the BMO building ended on Jan. 31. The “new space” at 140 N. Illinois St. will open on March 2, and we are planning a grand opening celebration in early April.
