A Republican-backed bill that could dissolve five Indiana school districts, including Indianapolis Public Schools, sparked backlash from advocates and district leaders who argue the legislation unfairly targets high-poverty and urban districts that primarily educate children of color.
The four other school districts that would be disbanded are: Gary Community Schools, Tri-Township Consolidated Schools in LaPorte County, Union Schools southeast of Muncie, and Cannelton City Schools near the Kentucky border in Perry County.
The charge comes after a lawsuit alleged Julious Johnican allowed and encouraged students to attack their 7-year-old classmate.
An Indianapolis police officer that punched a 17-year-old outside an Indianapolis high school last month now faces criminal charges.
Indianapolis Police Chief Bryan Roach says it was not “reasonable” for one of his officers to punch a teenager in the face during a confrontation outside a school captured in a video posted on social media. Roach said in a statement Saturday, “The video shows a clear image of a closed fist punch to the face, a technique which is not taught or reasonable given the facts known to us at this time.”
